Civil Engineering Dept.

Welcome to the Web Page for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering!

Civil Engineering Discipline

Civil Engineering is the second-oldest engineering discipline, preceded only by military engineering.It is perhaps the broadest of the engineering disciplines. It deals with the planning, design, and construction of buildings, roads, bridges, dams, canals, railroads, airports, water-supply systems, harbours, aqueducts, tunnels, and other engineered constructions. The major sub-divisions of civil engineering include structural engineering, highway and transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources and environmental engineering, construction engineering, hydraulic engineering and irrigation engineering.Environmental Engineering utilizes scientific and engineering principles to protect our local and global environments from the effects of potentially harmful natural and human activities as well as protect human populations from negative effects of the environment. The environmental engineering program in the Department focuses mainly on the design of water treatment plants, water resources management, and bioremediation.

Career Opportunities

Job prospects in civil and environmental engineering are as diverse as the discipline itself. Graduates of this discipline are employed by firms engaged in diverse consulting activities including building projects, road projects, dam construction,water and waste water projects, oil and gas facilities, as well as by firms engaged in consulting. Graduates can practice as freelance professional or work in the public or private sectors of the national economy. The public sectors include Federal and State Government Establishments, Ministry of Lands and Housing, Maintenance Agencies, and River Basin Development Authorities.Opportunities in the private sector include consulting (design) firms, construction companies, oil exploration, exploitation and servicing companies. Graduates of civil and environmental engineering can also enroll for higher degrees with a view to working in research institutions, universities and similar institutions upon successful graduation. As long as small towns and villages continue to upgrade to cities, cities continue to transform into mega cities, roads continue to be built, maintained and rehabilitated, engineered buildings (including skyscrapers) and other structures continue to be constructed, maintained and retrofitted, degraded environments (due to oil spillages) continue to requireremediation, the civil engineer will never be out of gainful employment.

Degree Option

Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Environmental Engineering (B.Eng. Civil and Environmental Engineering)

Programme Philosophy

In consonance with the national goals and objectives of industrialization and self- reliance, the undergraduate Civil and Environmental Engineering programme is geared towards: early broad-based training in general engineering and technology; the development of a thorough engineering practice after training; practical application of Civil Engineering in meeting the basic human needs; and close association of the programme with engineering industries in the country.

Graduates of the Civil and Environmental Engineering programmes should have acquired high academic standards with adequate practical background, to be of immediate value to industry and the nation in general.

The programme is structured such that students will have the opportunity to take courses that will provide a basic understanding of all areas of civil engineering practice, while they can concentrate in any of the following options in the final year: Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, and Construction Engineering.

Programme Objectives

On the strength of the above philosophy, the programme objectives are to:

a) develop in the students the ability to use their accumulated technical knowledge, sense of analysis, and creative design abilities, in various ways that can contribute to the development of a more satisfying life and environment for the country and for all mankind;

b) produce leaders, both in creativity and adaptability, in the planning, design, evaluation and analysis of technological innovation for improving the quality of the environment, and of life generally, in response to the ever changing goals and needs of the Nigerian society;

c) produce graduates that have entrepreneurial skills for self-employment in the Civil and Environmental Engineering profession; and

d) lay the foundation on which students can proceed to further studies in specialized aspects of Civil and Environmental Engineering practice or multi-disciplinary areas involving Civil and Environmental Engineering.
